If you’ve spent any time browsing our carefully curated online shop, you’ll already know that we’re serious about good design. Earlier this year, we took it a step further by launching our exclusive YIWI Studio collection and honestly, we couldn’t be more excited about it.
We’ve taken our trademark vibrant colours and positive vibe and created a collection of goodies that is straight FIRE. We’re talking beautylicious home accessories like this sleek Abstract Face Clock, and this premium Ceramic Planter, personalised stationery like this Spring Daffodils Notebook, and (our personal pick) wooden deckchairs with designs so stylish, they’re almost too good to sit on.
Loads of our Studio products are made to order, so we don’t make them unless you’ve told us you want them. That means that as well as being totally unique to you, there’s no waste, which is better for you and even better for the environment – yaaaass!
We had a little sit-down and a cuppa earlier this month with Amy Baker, YIWI Studio’s shamazing designer, and she told us all about her work on the swoon-worthy new collection…
So, Amy. We’re loving your work. Talk to us about how you do what you do.
We’re all about working collaboratively at YIWI, so while I create the illustrations for YIWI Studio, the whole team gets involved. We’ll get around a table and share artists, design trends and other ideas. That’s often how a new collection comes to life. Once I’ve got my inspo, I’ll go off and create a mood board to capture the feel of the new collection, before drawing up some initial sketches. When the gang have seen the designs and are happy that they are as fabulous as they can be, I pull together the final artwork and mock it up on the products, so we can gauge how they work together as a collection.
You’re clearly a super-talented designer. But what inspired you to work in design?
Aw thanks guys! Well, there’s nothing I love more than being creative. Working in design means I get to do that every day – win! I also like mixing things up, and working in design (especially for YIWI), means I get to work on all sorts of different creative projects, which is brilliant.
What’s the best bit about your job?
Actually, it’s the research stage for me, when we’re figuring out what direction we want to take with a new collection. I love working with the rest of the team and sharing ideas. Everything’s really fresh and exciting at that point – it feels like anything could happen!
So tell us, what was your design inspo for the typography collection?
Well, the team was keen on working on a collection using feel-good phrases, as we’re all about positivity and feeling good! I love working with clean lines and geometric shapes, so I decided to combine that with the retro style colour palette which is so popular right now. We’re loving the end result and hope you do too!
We’re crushing hard on the Abstract Face Collection. How long did it take you to design it?
Funnily enough, the designs themselves didn’t take too long! The most time-consuming stage actually comes before that. Research, discussions with the team and producing mood boards was the biggest part of the job. Oh, and preparing all the files for all the different products they need to be printed on, which might not be as exciting as the design stage but is still super important.
Which YIWI Studio collection is your fave and why?
My favourite collection hasn’t actually been released yet! I designed it when I first started at YIWI and it has a magic theme to it, with golds, black and hand-drawn elements – lush! It’s very close to my heart and I’m beyond excited to see the designs printed.
We can’t wait to see it! What else can we expect from YIWI Studio in the future?
We’ve got tonnes of projects on the go, so look out for plenty of new collections! We’re currently exploring more customisable designs so you can add your own text and photos – I love these because every product is totally unique. We’ve also got all our Christmas collection designs ready, so get ready for some seriously stylish festive goodies. I’m really excited to see how these work with our new product range.
