The Cadbury story

In 1824, John Cadbury opened a grocer’s shop in Birmingham, and he sold cocoa and drinking chocolate, which he prepared himself using a pestle and mortar – that’s almost 200 years of bringing pleasure to a nation of chocolate lovers! In 1831, good old JC started manufacturing on a commercial scale, when he bought a warehouse. By 1842, he was selling 16 varieties of drinking chocolate and 11 cocoas.

It wasn’t until 1897 that Cadbury made their first bar of milk chocolate. Made of milk powder paste, cocoa mass, cocoa butter and sugar, it probably wouldn’t have been much to our taste today! Soon after, George Cadbury Jr set about developing a chocolate bar with a high milk content and superior taste – the result of his efforts, Dairy Milk, was launched in 1905, sold in unwrapped blocks that could be broken down into penny bars. It was a massive hit and by 1920 had taken over the UK market. These days, 350 million bars of Dairy Milk are sold every year, which is almost one million a day! (We’ll own up to at least ten of those…)
