Doctor Stephen Strange came straight from the brains of our fave comic book nerds at Marvel. Created by Steve Ditko with Stan Lee, the character first appeared in 1963 in Strange Tales. The Doctor is the ‘Sorcerer Supreme’, the protector of Earth against magical threats (all in a day’s work) and was created with the idea of bringing themes of mysticism to Marvel Comics. The Doctor begins as a talented surgeon who damages his hands beyond repair in a car accident. He searches the globe for a way to heal his damaged hands, but comes across the Ancient One, the Sorcerer Supreme, and becomes his student, learning to be a master of both martial and mystical arts. Strange then assumes the title of Sorcerer Supreme himself and with the help of his friend and valet, Wong, defends the world from mystical threats.

The character first appeared on live action TV in the 1978 TV film Dr Strange (played by Peter Hooten). More recently, he’s been played by Benedict Cumberbatch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Doctor Strange (2016), Thor: Ragnarok (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) and the soon to be released Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022) – he’s a busy guy!
