Toblerone

The Toblerone story
Our fave triangular choc was first produced in Switzerland in 1908 by Emil Baumann and Theodor Tobler. Baumann (Tobler’s cousin) came up with the unique recipe and Tobler hit upon the distinctive triangular shape and packaging. The product’s name is a combo of the Italian word torrone (a type of nougat) and Tobler’s name.
Legend has it that the Matterhorn (Switzerland’s most majestic peak) inspired the shape of our fave choc bar (and an image of the mountain can still be found on the packaging today). According to Tobler’s sons, though, the inspiration was a show at the Folies Bergere, where the frilly dressed dancers formed a giant human triangle at the close of the show. Whatever the case, the distinctively shaped chocolate was an instant hit and remains so today.
