Aah Pinterest. We’ve spent many an hour lusting over your glossy interiors. Industrial-style light fittings! Fiddle leaf figs! Persian rugs! While Pinspo and Insta-piration can be wonderful things, sometimes you need to step awaaaayyy from those boards and go back to thinking about what makes you, you. You don’t want to be the same as everybody else, do you? So why would your home be any less unique than you are? You’re a unicorn dagnammit!

Your space needs to show who you are and what you love. That doesn’t mean hanging life-size self-portraits in every room! It just means getting creative and putting your own personal stamp on your home.

7 ways to bring more personality to your space

  1. Love everything you buy, down to the last coaster - If you don’t love it, don’t buy it. Simples.
  2. Highlight your hobbies - If you play the guitar, display it on the wall. If you collect vinyl, buy some wall frames for your favourite album covers. If you paint, hang that art proudly you clever thing you!
  3. Pay attention to the small things - Even the tiniest of details count (in fact sometimes they count the most). The smallest, silliest items are the ones that really show personality. If you enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning get a daft mug that really speaks to you. If you’re into llamas, then get yourself some stuff with llamas on!
  4. Display personal items (no we don’t mean your knickers) - photos of loved ones, accomplishments, personal artefacts, souvenirs – anything that triggers a memory and makes you smile. Like those pebbles you collected on that sun-soaked beach, the diploma you’re so proud of, and the portrait your niece did of you that looked like Trump on a bad hair day.
  5. Upcycle – Upcycling a piece of furniture is a sure-fire way of ensuring you’ve got something totally unique. You can pick up dark wood furniture for a steal at furniture specific charity shops (the British Heart Foundation have great ones) and Gumtree and Ebay have countless bargains up for grabs. Then just get some furniture paint and brushes, do your prep and take your item from shabby to chic!
  6. Ditch safety in favour of creative accents - Bring a pop of colour to the room, play with pattern, invest in that quirky statement lamp. Just anything but beige.
  7. Use open shelving – Displaying books is a great way of showing what you’re all about - we are what we read! Arrange them by colour for impact and accessorise shelves further with trinkets and standing photo frames.
