Men are getting serious about grooming
From the rise of the ‘metrosexual’ to widespread expectation that men can and should care about their appearance, we’re seeing more and more guys take proper care of their skin and hair. And rightly so.
According to research, between June 2018 – June 2019 sales of men’s face masks increased by a whopping 111%. Sales of other men’s skincare products also grew considerably, showing men are investing more in their skin and overall appearance.
Experts put this down to the ‘Love Island’ effect, as one of TV’s most popular shows features well-groomed modern men looking tanned, toned and ‘manscaped’. Other’s put it down to the ‘selfie generation’. Whatever the reason, we think it’s great guys are taking better care of themselves.
Why skincare is important for guys – skin facts and tips
Looking after your skin should be important for all of us. Several studies have found direct correlation with how good a person skin looks and their confidence and overall mood. It can have a huge impact on how you feel.
The most obvious difference between guys and girls when it comes to skincare, is far fewer guys wear make-up. So if a dreaded spot appears, guys are more likely to grin and bear it rather than attempt to cover it up. Make-up also traps moisture into the skin, so if you don’t wear any your skin is more exposed to things like the sun, pollution and air conditioning.
Did you know guys have a different chemical layer in the skin to women? Due to testosterone levels, men’s skin ages differently and they have a thicker dermis. In fact, a man’s skin is around 25% thicker than that of a woman’s!
Men are also more likely to shave their face than women. The skin is not a fan of shaving as it’s really drying and can be irritating (not to mention those accidental shaving cuts!).
For all the above reasons, men’s have a greater need for hydrating skincare products. SPF moisturiser and hydrating face masks should definitely be a part of every grooming routine.
Guys also have larger pores and produce more sebum. Breakouts and black heads can be more common and long-lasting in men due to higher sebum levels. Sebum production stays the same in male skin throughout life, whereas it decreases with age in female skin. A great way to control excess oil is to use a charcoal mask at least once a week.
Remember people - knowledge is power, so now go forth and get ready to bask in the glory of great skin!
