Light up your life
Any interior designer who knows their feng shui from their hygge, will tell you that lighting is absolutely key to creating a welcoming space. It used to be that we’d walk into a room, flick on a light switch for one central ceiling light, and that was it, but that’s just soooo old school. These days we’re spoilt for choice with the most amazing selection of ways to illuminate our homes. In fact, there’s so many gorgeous options out there, we sometimes find ourselves feeling a little overwhelmed! Learn your dimmer from your downlight with our handy guide to fantabulous lighting…
Light your room like a pro
1) Choose the right bulbs. The light bulb market has gone through a huge change in recent years with energy-saving, dimmable, LED and retro filament styles appearing. When selecting your bulbs, think about how much light you need for each lighting point, whether you want a coloured or white light (if it’s white you’re after, there’s warm or cool white to choose from), and if it’s exposed industrial-style lighting, you’ll need to decide what type of filament tickles your pickle.
2) NEVER rely on a single light source. Much like the best outfits, it’s all about layering. That means embracing the whole range of lighting options available: pendant, wall, floor lamps, feature lighting and table lamps. Basically, more is more! You don’t have to get the electrician in either - plug-ins are brilliant for flexibility as you can add and take away lamps easily, giving you maximum flexibility to respond to changing light levels throughout the year – so cool!
3) Make sure it’s useful. Lighting can broadly be divided into three categories – task, ambient and accent. Ambient lighting is like the general base that creates mood, accent lighting is about highlighting particular features of a room, and task lighting needs to brighten those corners that have a specific function. So, you’ll want to make sure you’ve got a lush lamp for your desk as well as for your bedside table, so you can read the latest blockbuster or chick-lit smash without straining your eyes!
4) Then add some personality. Lighting can be so much more than just something that stops you tripping over your handbag in the dark. The right kind of quirky lamp can be a feature in itself, create a talking point, and function like a piece of art. With the cutest fairy lights in all the colours of the rainbow and striking neon sign lights, you can stay bang on trend and with ‘make your own’ versions, the creative potential is limitless.
