We’re a generation of plant lovers

If you’ve got an Instagram-worthy house full of plants, then you’re super on trend right now. We’re all about growth of greenery and it seems we’ve become a generation of committed plant lovers. In fact, a 2016 National Garden Survey concluded that of the 6 million people who had taken up gardening that year—both indoors and out—5 million were millennials!

Having your very own luscious green urban jungle is great and all, but as many of you guys know, keeping our houseplants alive can be quite the challenge! Luckily for you, we’ve got a varied selection of planters, pots and misters, as well as a summary of all the best tips to keeping houseplants. You’re welcome.

Tips and tricks for happy, healthy houseplants

Match plants with light conditions. Houseplants vary in their light requirements, so it’s important to match your plant to it’s desired light condition! Some plants prefer the strong light found next to a south-facing window, while others thrive in the soft morning light of an east-facing window. The bottom line is, the better you match your houseplants with the light conditions they prefer, the happier they’ll be.

Choose the right pot. Don’t underestimate the importance of pot size! The pots you keep your plants in can have a huge impact on their growth and happiness. Remember to consider size, material and even colour!

Use good-quality potting soil. Good potting soil helps your gorgeous greenery stay super healthy by providing a balance of proper aeration, nutrition and moisture-holding capability.

Water properly. Like all containerized plants, houseplants need frequent watering. To check soil moisture, stick your finger into the top 2 inches of soil. If it is dry, it's probably time to water. You can also tell how dry a plant is by lifting the pot. It will be heavy after watering, lighter as it dries out.

Fertilize and control pests. The frequent watering required by most houseplants can drain nutrients out of the soil. These must be replaced by regular fertilization. And insects, such as Aphids, Scale and Whiteflies, can be problematic indoors. Regularly inspect your houseplants for signs of insect pests and treat when necessary.

Increase humidity and prevent drafts. Indoor conditions can be dry and drafty. Keep plants away from heater vents, doorways and drafty windows. Increase humidity by setting plants on trays layered with small pebbles and filled with water, or place them in naturally humid areas like kitchens or bathrooms if there is adequate light.

Keep foliage clean. Dust that accumulates on the leaves of houseplants will block light and harbor insects. Keep your plant’s leaves squeaky clean by wiping them with a moist towel.
