The birth of the lava lamp
The lava lamp was invented in 1963, by Edward Craven-Walker, and was based on a home-made egg-timer. The lamp appeared in cult movie Barbarella and quickly became a design classic and a symbol of the swinging 60s.

But how the heck do lava lamps work?
The main ingredients for the lava lamp are water and wax. Water and wax don’t mix, so the wax sits in blobs in the water. If you add a little heat (when you switch on the bulb), the wax becomes warm and less dense, which means it rises. Then as it reaches the top, it’s cooled by the water and begins to fall again, resulting in the groovy lava lamp motion.

Why we love lava
Who doesn’t love a lava lamp? As well as being a design classic and an icon of the 60s, they provide accent lighting and a calming focus to a room. There’s nothing we love more than putting on a mellow playlist and watching the hypnotic motion of the wax. Whether you’re after a glitter lava lamp, a large lava lamp, or a metallic space age model, we’ve got you – good vibes guaranteed.
