Using mood lighting to cosy-fy your home
You've painted the walls. You've arranged the furniture. You've decorated the mantelpiece with your favourite photographs and that little ceramic giraffe you just HAVE to have on show. But something's not quite right... it just doesn't feel 'cosy' enough. That's where mood lighting comes in!
It might not be at the top of your list, but it's amazing how much lighting can affect the atmosphere of your home! To bring a touch of warmth to a room, a little bit of clever mood lighting is all you need. Well, a big roaring log fire and hot chocolate on tap wouldn't go amiss either – but we can always dream!
We find it best to think about lighting like a cake: in layers. The bottom tier is your 'ceiling lighting' – it serves a purpose and creates a foundation, but it's nothing special. The second layer is your 'task lighting', like a floor lamp next to your reading chair or a desk lamp on – you guessed it – your desk. But the buttercream icing; the cherry on top; the pièce de résistance is the mood lighting!
What kinds of mood lighting are there?
Mood lighting is a brilliant way to cast ambience across any room, creating a calm and relaxing atmosphere that just feels like 'home'. It comes in all shapes and sizes, from spotlights with dimmer switches (a little 70s, but that's not the worst thing in the world!) to quirky novelty lamps. We love this magical colour-changing Harry Potter Lamp in the shape of a bottle of Polyjuice Potion – a great gift for a Potter-loving student.
Want to take it to the next level? Scatter a few candles around your home for a final flourish – bonus points for cosy scents, like spiced citrus, almond or vanilla. Aaaaaand relax!
