The history and science of neon lighting is worth a brief mention. Discovered as late as 1898, neon is, in fact, a naturally occurring gas, a chemical element that gives off a blaze of coloured light when contained in electrical tubing. In Paris, neon was quick to catch on: the ever-stylish capital projected an advertising sign for the vermouth Cinzano in 1913 that illuminated the night sky, and, within six years, the entrance to the Paris Opera was bathed in bright neon (ooh la la!). After that, neon signs took off in a big way, setting the tone for 1950s New York City (think vintage postcards of Times Square), and glittering over the Las Vegas Strip in the 1960s and 70. And then they flickered out of vogue - until now. In recent times, contemporary artists such as Tracey Emin and Rebecca Mason have been experimenting with neon lights, bending the supple tubes to create glowing text and imagery, and their influence has trickled into interior design. Today, the neon light is the ultimate in home décor - with delightful range, you can hang a neon sign in your hallway; pop a neon lamp on your work desk; or even have go at bending your own neon tubes to create personalised lighting!

History lesson over, its time to explore our very own range of neon products, curated specially for you by our expert buyers. Our beautifully designed signs recall the glamour of 1950s, New York jazz clubs: a neon red arrow; a slender champagne flute with pink lettering that reads, ‘Prosecco time’; a fizzing orange tankard, stamped with the words ‘Beer o’clock.’

In the market for something a little more modern? The Love Heart Neon Effect Light channels Tracey Emin’s artwork, designed to look like the chalky 70s Love Heart sweet, with the seductive words ‘Kiss Me’ emblazoned in glowing pink letters. If you’re feeling creative, why not grab yourself a make-you-own kit in blue, pink, or white, and see what you can craft for the perfect, personal touch to your home.

What’s more, the neon sign makes an ideal gift for the new uni student, the newly weds, or the new home owner: a fabulous addition to any interior and a present that will earn you serious cool-girl points!
